Old Settler’s Reunion to feature fun for all ages

Oskaloosa The city of Oskaloosa will have its 101st Old Settler’s Reunion Thursday through Sunday.

Festivities Thursday and Friday will begin at 6 p.m., and will include a carnival, games, food stands, ice cream social, a street dance and craft booths.

On Saturday, a parade and children’s games begin at 9 a.m. A hot rod car show will be at 10 a.m. At 6:30 p.m. Saturday, the Old Settler’s Parade will begin.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, Oskaloosa native James Reynolds and co-star Valerie Wildman, who play Abe Carver and Faye Walker on NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” will star in “Words of Love.” Proceeds from the event will benefit Jefferson County Health Department Senior Personal Care Services.

Carnegie Cultural Center offers romantic comedy

Ottawa “Talley’s Folly,” a romantic comedy by Lanford Wilson, will be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at the Carnegie Cultural Center, Fifth and Main streets, Ottawa.

The play is set in the 1940s in a boathouse in the Ozarks and follows the theme of love versus societal conventions. The play stars Tim and Kim Conard, and it is directed by Rebecca Campbell.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Tickets are available at the door or at the center, 242-8478.

Lawrence City band plays annual children’s concert

The Lawrence City Band will present its annual children’s concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday in South Park, 11th and Massachusetts streets.

The program includes “Entry of the Gladiators” by Julius Fucik; “A Walt Disney Overture,” arranged by Frank Erickson; “Tubby the Tuba,” featuring tuba player Chris Lair and narrator Bob Newton; “The Gollywog’s Cakewalk” by Claude Debussy; “Children’s March” by Percy Aldridge Grainger; “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” by Frank Churchill; “Shoutin’ Liza” by Henry Fillmore; “I’m a Jayhawk,” arranged by James Barnes and featuring a march by children around the park; “Polly Wooly Doodlin’,” arranged by James Curnow; “Arranger’s Holiday” by Paul Yoder and Harold Walters; and “High School Cadets” by John Philip Sousa.

The concert will be broadcast at 6 p.m. Thursday on KLWN-AM 1320.
