Chain of accidents leaves two injured

Two people were injured Saturday when one accident led to another about 1:40 p.m. on Kansas Highway 10 east of Lawrence.

Brandie Peterson, 28, Olathe, was westbound on the highway just east of its intersection with East 1750 Road when she attempted to pull onto the shoulder to help a stranded motorist, Douglas County Sheriff’s Lt. Kathy Tate said. Peterson lost control and spun back onto the highway, twice striking a westbound 1997 Ford F350 pickup truck that was pulling a trailer with a boat.

The truck, driven by Andrew J. Everett, 26, DeSoto, veered into the median.

Motorists in the eastbound lanes saw the truck coming across the median and stopped. As Edward Volkmer, 20, Overland Park, waited behind eastbound traffic in his 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck, an eastbound 1998 Plymouth Neon driven by Gwendolyn Allen, 29, Eudora, skid for 88 feet and struck the pickup from behind, Tate said.

Volkmer and his passenger, Steven Volkmer, 20, Eudora, were not injured. Allen was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Neither Everett nor his passengers Jeremy Towner, 27, and Cody Towner, 3, both of DeSoto suffered injuries. Peterson was taken to LMH, where she was treated and released.
