Apple Valley Farm continues ‘Drunkard’ tradition, debuts musical

? The Karen Hastings Players have kicked off its summer season at the Dale Easton Barn Theatre at Apple Valley Farm with another turn of its longtime running melodrama, “The Drunkard.”

The play is presented at 8 p.m. Saturdays through Sept. 21.

A melodrama parody in two acts, “The Drunkard” encourages audience members to boo and hiss the dastardly villain, and to cheer and applaud the heroes and heroines. An olio, or series of vaudeville sketches and music, is after each performance.

The cast includes Phil Grecian, Robb Baker, Melissa Boyer, Jeff Boyer, Joe Martin, John Hanna, Fred Salazar, Stephanie Schuttera, Kirsten Hanna and Hastings. Melissa Hebert, Sally Jenkins and Jeff Greg are alternate actors.

On Friday nights, the troupe presents its original musical, “Bluegrass & Apple Jam” at 8:30 p.m. The show runs through Aug. 30.

Written, produced and directed by Hastings, “Bluegrass & Apple Jam” features Baker, Joe Kampsen, Teri Walton, Ceci Yager and Cory Yardley.

The story follows a country and bluegrass band in rehearsal, as the musicians present many well-known and not-so-well-known songs that help them share their philosophies, remember their loved ones and take time out for romance. Musical instruments include pianos, guitars, accordions, banjos, mandolins, crescent wrenches, washtub bass and kitchen utensils.

Tickets are $12 and $14. To make reservations, call (888) 634-4219. Apple Valley Farm is on the east side of Lake Perry, 9 miles north of Perry.
