Salina: Smoking ban challenged

A group opposing a limited smoking ban in restaurants has presented petitions seeking to repeal the ban.

Gary Swartzendruber, leader of the Coalition for Reasonable People, presented county officials with petitions bearing 3,833 signatures of registered voters on Monday.

If 1,606 of the signatures are certified by the County Clerk’s Office, the Salina City Commission could choose to either repeal the ordinance or put it on the August primary ballot for voters to decide.

The ordinance would allow smoking in restaurants only between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
