Baldwin home showcased on national television series

A Baldwin couple’s dream home will be featured on “Dream Builders,” a Home and Garden Television series.

The production crew was in town Monday and today, spotlighting Judy and Wes Irvine’s home, west of Baldwin.

The building was designed by Kansas University architecture Professor Dan Rockhill.

Wes Irvine said Terrace House, as the home is known, took about three years to complete.

HGTV liked the finished product.

“We followed Dan Rockhill’s career,” said John Walker, “Dream Builders” producer. “He has certainly made a name for himself in American architecture.”

The segment featuring Terrace House will air in winter 2003 on HGTV, Sunflower Broadband Channel 45.

Courts: Lawrence resident found guilty of robbery

After seven hours of deliberations over two days, a Douglas County jury Monday decided Duwone Flowers was guilty in the September 2000 robbery of a North Lawrence convenience store.

Flowers, 32, will be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 2 by Judge Robert Fairchild.

Flowers was initially charged late last year with aggravated robbery in the Sept. 24, 2000, incident, which happened at Total Petroleum Inc., 1010 N. Third St. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia but was found not guilty of that charge.

Flowers already was serving a 4 1/2 year sentence for attempted robbery of Wendy’s, 523 W. 23rd St. That occurred in December 2000. A jury found him guilty of that charge last summer.

Fireworks: Rural Douglas Countians celebrate Fourth too early

Several people gathered in rural Douglas County on Saturday night to watch a fireworks display.

The only problem was they celebrated three days too early. Fireworks weren’t allowed to be shot off in the county until today. Thursday, the Fourth of July, is the last day to shoot them off.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy patrolling about 10 p.m. in the 900 section of East 1900 Road, about six miles northeast of Baldwin, saw the display and stopped to investigate.

The deputy stopped the fireworks display, Lt. Kathy Tate said. Information about the incident was given to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges were necessary.
