Highway vandals strike again

Douglas County Sheriff's Office says three more incidents have been reported

Three more reports of highway vandalism involving items thrown at vehicles have been reported to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

That brings the number of such incidents reported in June to 17.

Two of the incidents occurred on U.S. Highway 59. The third occurred on U.S. Highway 24-40 east of Lawrence near the Leavenworth County line, Sheriff’s Lt. Kathy Tate said. That was the first such incident to be recently reported that didn’t occur on U.S. Highways 59 or 56.

A 19-year-old Lawrence man said that on June 21 he was driving westbound on U.S. 24-40 when someone in a passing car threw an object containing a sticky fluid, damaging the hood of his Mazda Protege and knocking off a windshield wiper.

An 18-year-old Baldwin man reported the grill, radiator and headlight on his 1990 Jeep Wrangler were damaged by a plastic cup containing an unknown substance tossed by someone in a passing car. The incident occurred June 20 near the south edge of Pleasant Grove on Highway 59.

Tuesday evening a metallic container struck a 2001 P.T. Cruiser driven by a 53-year-old Pomona woman. The woman was driving south on Highway 59 about 1 1/2 miles south of Pleasant Grove. The car sustained damage to the hood and windshield.

The last reported incident occurred last Tuesday, Tate said.
