Toronto sends Mondesi to Yankees for reliever
Boston The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Raul Mondesi from the Toronto Blue Jays for 26-year-old reliever Scott Wiggins Monday night, hoping the slumping slugger can give them production in a position that’s been lagging this season.
The 31-year-old Mondesi has hit at least 24 home runs in seven straight years. He has 15 homers and 45 RBIs this season, but is batting only .224. Mondesi is making $11 million this year. He is due $13 million next season the Yankees will pay $7 million and the Blue Jays will be responsible for $6 million.
Atlantic City makes ‘Wild Thing’ a manager
Atlantic City Mitch Williams, who earned his nickname struggling with his control as a reliever for the Philadelphia Phillies almost a decade ago, became manager of the minor league Atlantic City Surf on Monday.
He replaced former Cincinnati infielder Tommy Helms, who resigned after 21/2 seasons under what general manager Mario Perrucci called a mutual agreement.
Castillo drops appeal
Boston Frank Castillo dropped his appeal of a five-game suspension Monday and won’t miss a start for the Boston Red Sox. He pitched Sunday and would take his regular turn Friday night against Detroit.
