Armed robbery report under investigation

Lawrence Police are investigating a possible armed robbery at a central Lawrence convenience store.

It happened just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Texaco station in the 1700 block of Massachusetts Street, Lt. Steve Zarnowiec said.

That's when the store clerk told police a suspect, who appeared to be a woman, entered the store, implied she had a weapon and demanded money, Zarnowiec said. The clerk never actually saw a weapon, he said.

The clerk handed over an unknown amount of cash, and the woman was last seen walking north from the store, Zarnowiec said.

The clerk said the woman was wearing dark clothes, a bandana over her face and had her jacket hood pulled up over her head.

Officers were searching the area late Tuesday for suspects.

Ottawa school board unhappy with property sale offer

Ottawa An offer to buy the old middle school in Ottawa received little support Monday night from the school board.

Supt. Jan Collins said Star Development Corp., Kansas City, Mo., submitted an offer to buy the middle school property for $50,000. He said the contract stated the buyer would be responsible for the demolition and cleanup of property. The sale also required the buyer to secure a demolition permit from the city.

"The board wasn't particularly interested in that kind of sale," he said of the demolition.

Collins said he or the board's attorney, Bob Bezek, plans to meet soon with the broker, Prestige Real Estate, Ottawa, and see if there are other purchasing options with the company.

Although the district has not received offers from other buyers, Collins said there have been a few people who recently looked at the building.

He said the board probably won't discuss the building and the pending offer until the next regular meeting Feb. 11.
