Board votes to clarify junior high boundaries
Lawrence school board members voted Monday to formally draw the boundary between Southwest and West junior high schools along Kansas Highway 40 and Stull Road, County Road 442.
The district's boundary committee had recommended the action to eliminate a situation in which residents of a rural development in the northwest part of the district were allowed to send their children to the junior high school of the family's choice.
The 6-1 vote, with Linda Robinson dissenting, means children living north of the boundary will go to West and those south of the line will go to Southwest.
Meanwhile, the board gave preliminary approval on a vote of 5-2 to assign a cluster of homes south of "Dad" Perry Park to Southwest from West. The change would affect eight elementary students and no junior high students.
Board delays decision on new Hillcrest trailer
A decision about replacing portable classrooms at Hillcrest School was tabled Monday to permit collection of more information about an insurance claim.
Tom Bracciano, the district's facilities director, said uncertainty had developed about the amount the district would receive after a Dec. 25 fire destroyed a portable classroom.
He had been prepared to recommend that the board replace two single-classroom trailers at Hillcrest, 1045 Hilltop Drive, with a double-classroom trailer that sells for $45,000. The large trailer would take the place of the burned trailer and another unit that is about 25 years old.
