He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Mountain Home, Ark., the son of Don and Betty (Riley) Cowart. He grew up in Clarkridge, Ark., and graduated from Bald Tom Grade School. He moved to Baldwin from Mountain Home, Ark., in 1952.
He began serving in the Army in 1941 and was stationed in Italy during World War II. He served in the 4th Tank Battalion under Gen. Patton and earned five Bronze Stars, six Overseas Bars, two Service and Campaign Ribbons, a Lapel Button and a Good Conduct Medal for his service. He received an honorable discharge in 1945.
Mr. Cowart was a carpenter and union liaison for Local Union No. 714, Kansas City, Kan., and worked at Hercules Army Ammunition Plant, DeSoto, for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge, both in Baldwin. He later worked for Oakwood Cemetery for several years after his retirement in 1970.
Mr. Cowart was a Boy Scout leader and involved in Teen Town, a youth program in Baldwin.
He married Mabel Irene Lane on Nov. 17, 1945, in Cotter, Ark. She died Sept. 5, 2001.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Morris, Baldwin, and Robin Clevenger, Lawrence; a son, Keith, Baldwin; a brother, James, Tacoma, Wash.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Joan Cowart, died earlier.
The family suggests memorials to Oakwood Cemetery Assn. or the care center, sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 64, 66006.
