— Kansas University's Marc D'Errico finished fourth and KU's 10th-ranked bowling team placed second in the elite Blue and Gold Classic on Sunday.

Fifth-ranked Wichita State won the team title with 12,132 pins, while KU was second with 12,080. No. 1 Western Illinois was third with 11,832, and No. 2 Saginaw Valley State was fourth with 11,660.

"It was a great event," KU coach Michael Fine said. "It was really a solid tournament for us. We were competitive from the get-go, and we were pretty darned successful. It was really closer than it looked. It came down to, whoever won that last game was going to win the tournament, and they beat us by 13 pins in that last Baker game. It was really a grueling finish. It came right down to the last few balls.

"It would have been nice to hold off Wichita State, but we're pleased. Hopefully, we'll move up in the rankings."

D'Errico, who made the all-tournament team, was fourth with a 210 average. KU's Jesse James was 16th with a 202 average. Kansas Mike Keeler was 18th with a 201, and Jason Elliot was 29th with a 193.
