Junction City Led by two individual champions and a runner-up, Free State High finished seventh in the 11-team Junction City Invitational wrestling meet Saturday.
The Firebirds received 70 of their 72 points from Matt Somers (3-1, third place at 119 pounds), Kyle Frank (2-1, second at 171), Justin Stephens (3-0, first at 189) and Ian B(3-0, first at 215).
"Our finalists pretty much carried all the weight for us today," FSHS coach Darrell Andrew said. "Justin's been wrestling extremely well these past couple weeks. Overall, we thought Free State had a very good tournament out the front door (finalists), but we still need to work on scoring points out the back door (other placers).
"We're very pleased with the performance and our kids looked great today."
Stephens improved to 28-0 overall this season, toppling Wichita Kapaun's Tony Hernandez, who had been 25-1 heading into the finals. Bknocked off Junction City's Jeff Frandan, ranked second in Class 6A, in their championship match.
Frank was defeated by Effingham's Derek Saught, a defending state champion, in the finals.
Goddard won the tournament with 142.5 points.
