Board to consider double-classroom trailer purchase

January 27, 2002

Bottom Line

The board will be asked to replace two single-classroom trailers at Hillcrest School, 1045 Hilltop Drive, with a double-classroom trailer that sells for $45,000.

Tom Bracciano, the district's facilities director, recommends the board authorize the purchase and allocate $4,100 to build entrance ramps. He said the purchase made better financial sense than leasing a double-classroom trailer or buying a single-classroom trailer.

He said a unit sold by Resun Leasing Inc. of Kansas City, Mo., could replace Hillcrest's single trailer gutted by fire Dec. 25 and another single that's been at the school more than a quarter century.

The board can pay for a portion of a new trailer with $30,000 due the district from its insurance company for the burned trailer.

The proposal to buy a portable comes during a district facilities study that includes an evaluation of whether the board can do away with dozens of trailers used for classes at crowded schools.

Board member Jack Davidson is a vocal critic of the district's reliance on portables. He questions academic, financial, security and safety aspects of the trailers.

"The board should say in a straightforward way: 'Our plan, in the long-term, is to get rid of these.'"
