Reid Crowe, Lawrence, member of Boy Scout Troop 59, will be honored at an Eagle Court of Honor at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Union Pacific Depot.

To earn Boy Scouting's highest award, Crowe earned 29 merit badges, served in leadership positions in the troop and completed a service project, which was the construction and placement of directional signs for Clinton Lake trails.

Reid began his scouting career as a Cub Scout with Pack 3053 at Hillcrest School. He joined Troop 59 in 1997. He has traveled on several High Adventure trips. Reid has traveled to the BSA Sea Base in Florida, hiked both the Isle Royale in Michigan and the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He has attended Camp Bartle and troop canoe trips. While at Camp Bartle, he advanced through ranks to Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

He is the son of Don and Karen Crowe, Lawrence. Reid is a sophomore at Lawrence High School.





Boy Scout Troop 52 will have its second annual pancake feed from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 948 Vt. The cost is $4 for a regular meal and $3 for a child's meal. Proceeds will be used for summer camp and to purchase equipment.





Josh Cosgrove of Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to First United Methodist Church of Lawrence, and Venturing Crew 2069, chartered to Lawrence Wesleyan Church, passed his Eagle Board of Review on Jan. 20. The Eagle rank is the highest in Boy Scouting. Josh will be presented with this award at a special Court of Honor.





Members of Cub Scout Pack 3057, chartered by the Lawrence Catholic School PTO, have been busy during the past several weeks. The Scorpion Webelos Den toured BKB Leather at 315 N. Second St., where owner Bruce Barlow explained leather-working tools and machinery. The boys each got to cut and stamp a piece of leather for a neckerchief slide. Boys who attended the tour were Michael Smith, Dom Reiske, Ethan Vogelsang, Henry Hodges and Andy Fitzgerald. Adults who attended were Harry Smith, David Hodges and Sue Reiske.

During a recent meeting, a speaker from the Lawrence Humane Society talked to the Pack about how to care for pets and how to avoid being bitten by dogs. The speaker also discussed the importance of getting pets spayed or neutered.

Pack 3057 conducted its annual Pinewood Derby Jan. 12. Those who participated were Nathan Evers, Adam Fales, Patrick Friedricksen, Nate Shobe, Preston Ward, Austin Barone, Johnathan Fitzgerald, Jimmy Kittel, Brady Murrish, Jacob Pfeifer, Adam Ramos, Patrick Shields, Lucas Vogersang, Chijike Dikegou, Sam Dillon, Kirby Evers, Patrick Fay, Carrick Finnegan, Robert Flaig, Zach Hill, David Brown, Andy Fitzgerald, Josh Hill, Henry Hodges, Dom Reiske, Michael Smith, Ethan Vogelsang and Chris Wildgen.

The following boys were champions of their dens: Nathan Evers, Tiger; Lucas Vogelsang, Wolf; Carrick Finnegan, Bear; and Henry Hodges, Webelos.

Henry Hodges was the overall Pack champion. Sydney Vogelsang won the siblings division. The coordinator was Kevin Barone.





Cub Scout Pack 3051, chartered to Pinckney School, held its Pack meeting Jan. 18. Its Pinewood Derby was conducted on Jan. 19 at Woodlawn School. At the Pack meeting, the boys checked in their Pinewood Derby cars and had trial runs. Bruce Wagner gave a presentation on day camp, and Mike McCurdy gave a presentation on the District Pinewood Derby, which will be March 2.

Winners of the Tiger Den were Mason Robinson, first place; Ian Gent, second place, and Christopher Sloan, third place. Winners of the Wolf Den 5 were: Tanner Hale, first place; and Brian Loux, second place. Winners in Wolf Den 8 were Mike Robinson, first place; Trevor Norris, second place; and Calvin Abbott, third place. Winners of Bear Den 6 were: Willy Gibson, first; Justin Stearns, second; and Damon Stephens, third place. Winners of the Sharks Webelos I were: Rich DiBenedetto, first place; Tyler Gibson, second place; and Austin Holladay, third place. Winners of the Whippoorwills Webelos II were: Keagan Taylor, first place; Chance McKinney, second place; and Casey Wagner, third place.

Winners of Panthers Webelos II were: Joseph Vannicola, first place; Jacob Burchett, second place; and John McLean, third place.

Winners of the overall Pack race were: Keagan Taylor, first place; Ian Gent, second place; and Rich DiBenedetto, third place. Casey Wagner won the award for craftsmanship. Jake Brown received honors for the Most Realistic Car. Keagan Taylor won the Best Lead Wedge award. Dylan Sauer had the "Best Color." Justin Stearns won honors for having the most unique car.

Open class winners were Ralena McCurdy, first; Lisa DiBenedetto, second place; and Audrey Taylor, third place.





Pelathe District had its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner Jan. 19 at Baker University's Student Union. More than 70 adult leaders and spouses attended. Helen Clark served as mistress of ceremonies. The opening ceremony was presented by Jordan Wright and Kevin Patch, two Boy Scouts from Troop 59. David Berkowitz gave the invocation, and Curtis Harris gave the State of the District Address.

During the meeting, Jim Peterson was recognized for receiving the Silver Beaver Award from the Heart of America Council, the highest Council award for adult volunteers. Wayne Deaver received the Leadership Training Award. Tom Sheely and Joe Yurek accepted the Quality District Award for Pelathe District. Troop 62, chartered to the Linwood Lions Club, won the Camping Award for having the highest percentage of participation in its camping program for 2001.

The District Award of Merit was given to Tripp Anderson and Frank Wright. This award is given to two adult leaders each year who show outstanding service for a significant period of time to the Boy Scout program in Douglas County.

The 2002 District Committee was announced. Those on the committee are: Tom Sheely, District chairman; John Frick, District vice chairman; Ken Baldwin, District commissioner; Helen Clark, Cub Scout Roundtable commissioner; Tammy Barta, Boy Scout Roundtable commissioner; Joe Yurek, membership chair; Mike McCurdy, activities chair; Pat Donahue, camping chair; Casey Jones, training chair; Keith Wood, advancement chair; Joe King, venturing chair; Frank Wright, relationships chair; Wayne Deaver, Scouts with disabilities chair; David Berkowitz, communications chair; Mike O'Connor, adult adviser to the Order of the Arrow; Kip Grosshans, family friends of Scouts chair; Allen Wiechert, representative to the National Eagle Scout Assn., and Curtis Neal Harris, district executive.





Cub Scout Pack 3059, chartered to First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, had its annual Pinewood Derby January 19. The top four finishers were: Adam Meyers, first place; Derek Kappelman, second place; John Wagner, third place; and Randy Walter, fourth place. Nathan Stringer had Best Car in Show. Drake Griffin was awarded the People's Choice Award, and Alex Schrock won the Sportsmanship Award.





Cub Scout Pack 3462, chartered to Langston Hughes School, hosted its first Pinewood Derby Jan. 12 at the school. Those who participated were: Connor Bolen, Trent Edwards, Nolan Frank, Ranjeet Ghorpade, Stephan Graves, Scott Ragan, Connor Schmidt, Colin Toalson, Robbie Andrews, Dawson Conway, B.J. Hambleton, Cyrus Hodgson, Kale Joyce, Joey Kopera, Tyler Lathrom, Caden Merz, Dylan Orth, Nick Shaheed, Nick Andrews, Jordan Bennett, Samuel Boatright, Thomas Boatright, John Corbett, Jacob Davis, Nicholas Hay, Drake Hofer, Evan Johnson, David Kopera, Josh Saathoff, Miles Stevens, Joseph Waisner, Alek Joyce, Dylan Lathrom and Dakota Anderson.

Winners were: Evan Johnson, first place; Jordan Bennett, second place; and Miles Stevens, third place. Trent Edwards was given an award for Most Original Design. The Best of Show award was given to Colin Toalson. Best Scouting Theme was awarded to Nick Shaheed. Nolan Frank, Kale Joyce, Dylan Lathrom and Dakota Anderson received "Best Effort" certificates.

The Den race results were: Evan Johnson, first place; Samuel Boatright, second place; and Thomas Boatright, third place, Tiger Cubs Den No. 1; Jordan Bennett, first; Miles Stevens, second; and Jacob Davis, third, Tiger Cubs Den No. 2; Nick Shaheed, first; Joey Kopera, second; B.J. Hambleton, third, Wolves Den; Connor Bolen, first place; Nolan Frank, second place; Scott Ragan, third place, Bear Den; Dylan Lathrom, first place; and Alek Joyce, second place, Webelos Den.
