Louisiana woes

To the editor:

Recently, Joel Mathis wrote an article in the J-W on the discussion of the city commissioners on "the preliminary finding of a study by TransSystems Corporation." Mathis noted: "One little-noticed item in the report: A proposal to also expand Louisiana Street to four lanes south of 23rd Street." Obviously, this item is being ignored by the city commission and the traffic safety board.

Instead, we have four "beautiful" traffic hazards on Louisiana Street and a new sidewalk on the east side of the street. This sidewalk replaces a perfectly good sidewalk from Park Hill Terrace to Broken Arrow Park. Since the new sidewalk is much closer to the street, it surely must provide greater safety for the children going to the Broken Arrow and South Junior High schools. It is certainly good to see our tax dollars at work improving "safety".

As long as there are four schools on Louisiana Street and it is the only north/south street between Haskell and Iowa, the need for Louisiana Street to become four lanes is as plain as the nose on your face a nose like Cyrano de Bergerac's. Likewise, the need for stop lights and turn lanes at 31st and Louisiana and at 27th/Park Hill Terrace and Louisiana are obvious.

Question: Since there was a bicycle lane on each side of Louisiana Street, are these now discontinued in the vicinity of the "beautiful" traffic hazard near Utah Street?
