Agency: Lawrence Memorial Hospital

Address: 325 Maine.

Phone number: 840-3141.

Contact person: Allyson Leland, director of volunteer services

The gift shop at Lawrence Memorial Hospital is short on volunteers and is looking for community members who are willing to lend a hand.

"We have several openings right now," Allyson Leland, director of volunteer services, said. "But our biggest need is in the gift shop. We have five openings there."

Leland said gift shop volunteers help with a range of activities, from stocking shelves to helping customers. Volunteers typically work one three- to four-hour shift each week.

"The proceeds go back to the hospital to buy equipment," she said.

In addition to the gift shop, Leland said other volunteer opportunities are available at the hospital for all ages and for different times of the day. Duties might include running errands for hospital staff, transporting patients in wheelchairs and making patients comfortable.

"We have 300 volunteers now," she said. "We have a variety of ages but the backbone group is the retirement-age person. We really rely on them."

Potential volunteers participate in an interview with hospital staff and go through a two-hour orientation session. Other training is provided, if needed.

Those interested in volunteering at the gift shop or other areas of the hospital can call Leland at 840-3141.

Last week's results

Becky Twedt, of the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, said the agency did not receive any calls after appearing in last week's "How You Can Help."

The agency is seeking businesses and individuals to join its Corporate Volunteer Council of Douglas County. Organizations who join are asked to commit to one major event during the year and to encourage their employees to participate in community events and volunteer opportunities.

Twedt said a corporate volunteer program builds positive working relationships between companies and their employees; strengthens teamwork among employees while meeting real needs in the community; and allows companies to show their commitment to the community.

To become involved in the Corporate Volunteer Council of Douglas County, call the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, 865-5030, or e-mail rhvc@ixks.com by Jan. 31.
