Three young people were injured when they jumped from their burning two-story home early Friday morning in a residential area just east of Kansas University in Lawrence.
The fire, which was reported at 4:42 a.m. at 1216 Ohio, was under control about 6:45 a.m.
Lawrence Fire & Medical Deputy Chief Mark Bradford said three of the home's occupants jumped from the upper floor of the two-story home after they were alerted to the fire by their barking dog.
After jumping, Derek Hein, 21; Lindsey Evans, 21; and Matt Medling, 22, were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital to be treated. Evans was still at LMH Friday afternoon with a back injury. Matthew Gader, 19, was in the basement of the home at the time of the fire and escaped.
After the fire was under control, firefighters did a search through the house and found the dog in the basement. The dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Aiko, did not survive.
"We located one smoke alarm that was in the basement and it was not operable," Bradford said.
Those at the home were members of a band, Big Metal Rooster, and lost most of their equipment, valued at $30,000, according to the mother of one of the residents.
Jerry Karr, battalion chief, said the fire started in the front living room on the first floor, which is on the west side of the home. The investigation is continuing. The most probably cause is a malfunction of electrical equipment, Karr said.
About 25 firefighters responded to the blaze.
