Memorial services for Chester B. Spray, 83, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. He donated his body to Kansas University Medical Center.
Mr. Spray died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.
He was born Aug. 9, 1918, in rural Perry, the son of Chester Allen and Hattie M. (Jones) Spray. He attended elementary school at Riverside. He then attended Lawrence Schools. He graduated from Liberty High School in 1937. He graduated from Kansas University in 1941 with a degree in business administration.
Mr. Spray enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Force for four years. He was a lieutenant (A1) and a dive bomber pilot during World War II. He received two Air medals and five Bronze Stars.
In 1955, he moved to the Lakeview area, where he was a farmer and stockman until he retired. He also worked as territory manager for Kelly Springfield Tire company, Kansas City, Mo., before he went to work at Norclay Firestone, North Kansas City, Mo., as a manager.
Mr. Spray had served as a spokesman for the North Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a vice-chairman of the merchants division at North Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and third vice-president of North Kansas City Lions club.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and past member of Riverside School Board and Rural District No. 1 Board, all in Lawrence. He was a member of the University Club, Lawrence.
He married Alice Christine Bodman on April 29, 1945. She died Sept. 19, 2000.
Survivors include a son, William R., Lawrence; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Haehl and Christina M. Spray, both of Lawrence; a brother, Carl, Lawrence; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the church or to U.S.S. Yorktown CV-10 Assn., sent in care of the funeral home.
