LINCOLN, NEB. For the first time in 16 years, the NCAA has put University of Nebraska athletics department on probation.
The university was placed on two years probation Wednesday for multiple infractions by former wrestling and swimming coaches, mostly involving cash given to athletes.
Coaches manipulated scholarships to exceed the university's limits for both the wrestling and swimming and diving programs, said Thomas Yeager, chairman of the NCAA's Div. I Committee on Infractions.
Former head wrestling coach Tim Neumann gave a total of nearly $6,000 to five wrestlers to help with school expenses, and $500 in cash to another wrestler so he could pay off a gambling debt, the committee found.
Several swimming coaches violated NCAA rules by asking swimmers to accept cuts in their financial aid, then reimbursing them with cash. The coaches contended that the swimmers agreed to arrangements in exchange for lodging and meal expenses paid during vacation periods on campus when the student-athletes were required to practice or compete.
