Gary Creten keeps a close watch on his 1,400 acres of cattle pasture in Douglas County.
"I just kind of watch my P's and Q's on it and make sure that I don't overgraze, and move the cattle to different paddocks," he said.
Gary Creten, Olathe, will receive the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts and Sharp Bros. Seed Company Grassland Award. He has seven different farms near Baldwin and owns about 80 acres in Johnson County.
Creten, of Olathe, will receive the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts and Sharp Bros. Seed Company Grassland Award.
Creten has seven different farms near Baldwin and owns about 80 acres in Johnson County. Using his truck and cell phones as a rolling office, he keeps tabs on his 420 head of cattle and the land they graze.
When he's not taking care of livestock, Creten is caring for his pastureland. In addition to occasional mowing, he reseeds, fertilizes and tries to stay ahead of noxious weeds.
"It's just proper management on the grassland," he said. "It's pretty easy to take care of, but if you let it go it's twice the work to catch up."
Creten, 55, has been raising cattle and taking care of grassland for 30 years.
"I'm going to do this as long as I can," he said.
