— Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim Shallenburger's campaign organization has a new treasurer, Topeka accountant Kirk Wiesner.

He took over after the end of the year from Rep. John Edmonds of Great Bend, who was also treasurer for Shallenburger's successful campaign for state treasurer in 1998.

Edmonds, who still supports Shallenburger's candidacy, said that campaign manager Alan Cobb "thought best that he have a treasurer that was based in Topeka."

A second reason for the change, said Shallenburger spokesman, was the Legislature's schedule, which will keep Edmonds in session until spring.

Shallenburger has already raised about $140,000 for the current campaign.

Atty. Gen. Carla Stovall already has declared her candidacy, and Wichita Mayor Bob Knight and State Sen. Dave Kerr of Hutchinson are considering runs.
