It looks like the tragic events of Sept. 11 have sent a horde of Americans in search of high-fat, high-calorie, nutrition-bereft comfort foods, says the American Institute for Cancer Research.
The agency sponsors cancer research and public education, and is pushing the message that most cancer can be prevented.
The first step is a daily diet that is two-thirds plant- and grain-based. The institute puts its money where its mouth is with an array of healthful recipes it promises won't be boring. At www.aicr.org, it offers new creations as well as skinnied-down versions of some classics. Nutritional information is included.
For example, a can of fat-free refried beans, select produce, mozzarella cheese and low-fat sour cream will get you a Jiffy Mexican Burrito with a decent profile 323 calories and 7 grams of fat.
There are no bells and whistles, but you get information to live by on this site. It's definitely worth exploring.
