She was born May 31, 1926, in Platte City, Mo., the daughter of William and Lillie (Fields) Brightwell. She was raised in and attended schools in Platte City. Her family then moved to Lawrence. In 1952, she moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where she worked in spud houses. She returned to Lawrence in 1996.
Ms. Slifer was baptized in the Mormon church.
Survivors include two sisters, Christine Hibner and Evelyn Athey, both of Lawrence.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., sent in care of the funeral home.
