Owner tries to thwart robbery attempt at Phil Zone

Two men tried to rob The Phil Zone, 1405 Mass., shortly before 5 p.m. Monday.

Phillip Sisson, owner, said one man distracted the employee working the front of the store while another man entered and snatched the small gray cashbox kept under a desk at the front of the store.

Sisson said he was in his office and saw the heist on the security monitor. He chased after the man and grabbed the cash drawer back.

Sisson, a volunteer firefighter in Clinton Township, also called police dispatchers on his two-way radio.

The two suspects managed to run away before anyone could detain them.

Sisson said both suspects were black; one was about 6 feet, 2 inches, bald, and wearing a fancy leather jacket. The other was wearing an olive green ski jacket.

The Phil Zone, previously scheduled to close in December, will close at the end of January.
