Government offices and public services in Lawrence will be closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
They also will be closed in most area towns.
City offices in Lawrence, Ottawa, Baldwin, McLouth and Oskaloosa will be closed today, but Eudora and DeSoto city offices will remain open. Douglas, Franklin, Jefferson and Leavenworth county offices all will be closed. State offices also will be closed.
Banks will be closed.
The Lawrence Transit System and T buses will operate regular hours and routes. Lawrence Bus Co. buses will not run.
Parking fees for the downtown area will be waived today.
There will be no disruption of service in city of Lawrence sanitation routes scheduled the week of Jan. 21. To report a water or sewer emergency after business hours or during weekends and holidays, contact the Utilities Department at (785) 843-2685.
Kansas University classes will not be in session today, and campus offices will be closed. All campus libraries will be closed.
Douglas County Senior Services will be closed today. All activities, including the Adult Day Program and the noon meal, will be canceled. Meals will not be served at Babcock Place, Edgewood Place, Lecompton, Eudora or Baldwin, and home-delivered meals will be canceled. Bus 62 services also will be canceled today.
Lawrence Memorial Hospital's Meals on Wheels will be delivered as scheduled.
Parks and Recreation activities, including adult sports league games, will be as scheduled today. Recreation but not gymnastics classes in Robinson Gymnasium will be in session.
The Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center will have regular lap swimming hours from 5:30 a.m. until 8:45 p.m. The center's family pool will open at 1 p.m., an early start from the regularly scheduled weekday opening. All learn-to-swim classes will meet as scheduled.
The Lawrence Public Library will be open.
The post office won't make regular deliveries today, but Express Mail deliveries will be made. Mail pickup from collection boxes might be made as posted on individual boxes. The best place to drop off mail to ensure it gets picked up today is at drop boxes at the Main Post Office, 645 Vt., Lawrence Postmaster Bill Reynolds said.
The circulation office at the Journal-World will be open for phone or walk-in business during its normal hours, from 4:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
