Coaching move

To the editor:

It is time for the real Kansas University athletic director to stand up. When he first started, he indicated that changes were to made at the university. He got everyone's hopes up. It didn't take a genius to determine what we needed to do for the football team. And, as far as we can tell, that appears to be the correct move. The future looks bright, and anticipation is high.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have the women's basketball team. I realize it may be hard, if not impossible, to remove a basketball icon in women's sports, but something needs to be done.

Take two quotes from Thursday's Journal-World. First the paper reported, "Nobody promised Marian Washington a rose garden in her 29th season ... But she was not expecting this many thorns." Who wasn't? I certainly was. Even the coach said, "The fact is we don't have a lot of talent now." Well, whose fault is that? And is that statement fair to the athletes playing for her?

The last home crowd was 873 fans. The average is 984. The Kansas State Wildcats had 13,466 fans at $5 a ticket show up to watch their women play. Now wouldn't that really help our athletic budget out?

So, in closing, I think our new AD needs to seriously look at asking Coach Washington to move on. We are in a new millennium and must go forward.

Lawrence
