Household hints: Set aside some time to get things in order

Rubbermaid offers these five resolutions to help improve household organization.

In the kitchen: Simplify and renew cleaning supplies.

Go through your current inventory of cleaning supplies. Often, just bleach, some window cleaner and cleanser are sufficient for just about every area of a house. Buy new brushes and sponges.

In the bedrooms: Maximize closet space.

Go through the clothes hanging in your closet. Sort your clothes, giving some to Goodwill or Salvation Army. And, yes, consider throwing out the clothes that have seen better days. Put infrequently accessed items toward the back and use the wasted space above your closet shelves for seasonal storage.

In the attic: Tackle long-term storage.

Spend a few hours going through those boxes and throw out what is no longer needed. Store what's left in protective containers.

In the garage: Make room for the car.

Go back to the basics of a garage storing the car. For one day, clear everything out of the garage except the cars. Try to find other places to keep everything else gardening tools in an outdoor shed, for example.

In the basement: Put everything in its own place.

Tools belong in toolboxes, brooms in broom closets. Dig yourself out of your basement by equipping yourself with new shelving or using the space you already have correctly.
