A band that takes its name from a town in Saskatchewan will perform a rousing concert of harmonies and melodies at the Lied Center.

The Canadian recording group Hart Rouge will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

At the core of the bilingual band are siblings Paul, Michelle and Suzanne Campagne. They grew up in Willow Bunch, one of only a few French-speaking communities in Saskatchewan. The town's original name was Hart Rouge.

Other members of the group are Michel Dupire, percussion, and Davy Gallant, instrumentalist.

The tension between the French and English cultures in Saskatchewan is reflected in the group's music. The group also has been influenced by James Taylor, Rickie Lee Jones, French chansonniers and roots-based music.

In the past decade Hart Rouge has toured in Canada, the United States, France, Estonia, Sicily and Vietnam. The band's 1991 release, "Inconditionnel," was featured on "So Many Smiles and Words Between Us," a one-hour television special that won a silver medal at the Houston International Film Festival.

The band has released a CD every year since 1991. Its latest is "Beaupre's Home," which includes songs written by Nanci Griffith, Roy Forbes, Connie Kaldor, Zachary Richard and Lennie Gallant.

While in Lawrence, Hart Rouge will perform "From Quebec to Baton Rouge" for students at East Heights School at 1 p.m. Thursday and will participate in a talk-back after the Lied Center concert.

Tickets are from $11 to $27 and can be purchased at the Lied Center Box Office, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall Box Office, 864-3982; Student Union Activities Box Office, 864-3477; Ticketmaster, (816) 931-3330 or (785) 234-4545; and online at TICKETS.COM.
