Laurie Drinkard, a physical therapist at Neu Physical Therapy, recently became nationally certified as a therapist in manual lymph drainage and complete decongestive therapy by the Lymphology Association of North America. Patrick Knorr, general manager of Sunflower Broadband, Lawrence, was the subject of a "Meet the Operator" feature story in the Jan. 7 issue of Cable World, a trade magazine.

In the article, titled "On the Fast Track in Kansas," the magazine noted Knorr's management of complex projects. Among them were Sunflower's fiber-optic rebuild, integration of three systems acquired from Galaxy Cablevision, launch of a digital-telephone system and rebranding of the company, which formerly had been known as Sunflower Cablevision.

"Meet the Operator" is a weekly feature that highlights cable operators who stand out from the crowd either because of their success in running systems or because of an unusual background. Knorr was chosen because of his relative youth he's 29 and "extensive tech background," editor Scott Collins said.

Cable World is published by Media Central, a Primedia unit. It has a circulation of about 25,000, primarily cable operators and programmers.

Sunflower is a division of The World Company, which also owns the Journal-World.





Kansas high school seniors interested in accounting careers may apply for a scholarship from the Educational Foundation of the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants. For the 2002-2003 year, 10 awards worth a total of $3,800 will be given to students who receive high scores on the ACT or SAT college qualifying examinations.

The Douglas County Community Foundation has selected Marilyn Dobski and Dan Lambert as new members of its board of directors. Dobski serves as president of the Lawrence Arts Center Board of Directors. Dobski is co-owner of Dobski & Associates, which owns and operates McDonald's restaurants in Lawrence and other communities in northeast Kansas. Lambert is president of Baker University, Baldwin.

Other members of the board are Mike Davis, chairman; Francois Henriquez, vice chairman; and Robert Georgeson, Hortense Oldfather and Barbara Reavis.

The foundation encourages support of local charitable causes.





The Kansas City Board of Trade has announced the appointment of its outside directors for 2002: Kevin Barth, president and chief operating officer of Commerce Bank; Tom Tunnell, president of Kansas Grain and Feed Assn.; Barry Flinchbaugh, professor and extension state leader of agricultural economics at Kansas State University; and Michael Braude, executive vice president of Country Club Bank. They sit on the exchange's board along with 12 members.





Joy Murphy has joined the Lawrence Family Practice Center, 3510 Clinton Parkway. The graduate of Kansas University's School of Medicine recently moved from Rochester, N.Y., where she completed her residency. Murphy, an Ottawa native, is a board-certified family practitioner. She provides comprehensive primary care, including obstetrical and pediatric services. Lawrence Family Practice plans to relocate this summer to a new building at 18th Street and Wakarusa Drive.





Michael Berry, manager of Professional Engineering Consultants' Topeka office, has been appointed to the company's board of directors. He is responsible for managing the activities of a multi-discipline technical staff engaged in the design of civil/survey, water/wastewater and land development projects. He has more than 21 years of design and construction experience. The company also has offices in Lawrence, Wichita and Pittsburg.





To commemorate its 20th anniversary, Lawrence-based Callahan Creek announced the establishment of a scholarship fund to support graduate-level studies in integrated marketing communications at Kansas University's Edwards Campus in Overland Park. Cindy Maude, chief executive officer of Callahan Creek, said $20,000 was being pledged to the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications through the Kansas University Endowment Association.

Callahan Creek, with 56 employees, expects capitalized billings of $37 million this year through its work for clients, including Sprint Corp. and Hill's Pet Nutrition.





Lawrence-based Cardinal Brands Inc. announced the recent appointment of Barry Conway as president of the company's international division, giving him responsibility for business operations in Canada, Mexico and United Kingdom and for all exports to Latin America and Europe.

Conway continues to serve as executive vice president of the company, which he joined 1966.

Three other employees were promoted to handle new roles in the international division.

Terry Haines was appointed general manager and director of international sales for Canada, United Kingdom and Europe. Haines has worked for the company for 14 years. He has been responsible for marketing and sales across Canada, and will continue to work from the a company business office in Toronto.

Stuart Pearson has been appointed director of finance/administration and is responsible for overseeing finances and information technology in Canada and United Kingdom. His main office of operation is in Stratford, Ontario.

Zaida Rodriguez-Rose has been appointed international marketing manager, responsible for the marketing initiatives for all Cardinal Brands' international programs. She works out of a company office in St. Louis. For the past five years, Rodriguez-Rose has handled the company's export sales, predominately to Puerto Rico, Central America and South America.





Lynate Pettengill, a Lawrence-based life coach, has received national media exposure in a number of popular media outlets recently.

Pettengill was quoted in an article, "Holiday Etiquette For Divorced Parents," that appeared in the December issue of Family Digest magazine. She also will be mentioned in an upcoming Woman's World magazine article addressing the increased popularity of life coaching, as well as an article in the Chicago Tribune later this month.

Pettengill is a member of the International Coach Federation and focuses her work in two specialties: Parenting After Divorce and Highly Sensitive People.

The Lawrence Home Builders Assn. recently elected officers and members for its board of directors.

Officers for 2002 are Bob Santee, of Denning-Santee Construction, president; Bud Hunt, of Hunt Inc., vice president; Tim Schmidt, of Schmidt Builders Supply, secretary; and Glynn Sheridan, of U.S. Bank, treasurer.

Elected to serve three year terms on the board: George Grieb, of Lynn Electric; Dee Perry, of Perry Construction; and Lee Queen, of Edmondson Construction.

Honors and awards

Stormont-Vail HealthCare and Jones Seel Huyett, both located in Topeka, recently received five Emerald Award Certificates of Merit at the Kansas Hospital Assn.'s 2001 Kansas Hospital Convention in Wichita. The awards recognized the 2000 Stormont-Vail HealthCare Physician Directory; a Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Network advertising campaign; a Cotton-O'Neil Heart Center advertising campaign; a "Healthy Woman" education series; and a "BreastCare is Up to You" advertising campaign. The awards are sponsored by the Kansas Association of Health Care Communicators.

The Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center will present a seminar, "How To Tighten Control on Production Costs," from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Enterprise Center of Johnson County, 9875 Widmer Road, Lenexa.

The seminar will teach manufacturers how to clamp down on waste and keep labor, inventory, overhead and other production costs under tight control. The seminar's instructor is Walter Lacey, who has more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing, human relations and employee development.

Registrations and sponsorships are being accepted for The Big Chill Golf Tournament, organized by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

The tournament will be conducted Feb. 8 at Alvamar Country Club, Lawrence. The nine-hole, shotgun format tournament starts at 1 p.m., and includes a chili supper and awards party after the competition.

The registration deadline is Feb. 1. The field will be limited to 144 golfers, and is open to chamber-member businesses and their employees. The cost is $60 per person.

The Kansas Chapter of Singles in Agriculture is gathering Jan. 26-27 in Topeka. The group will tour the Combat Air Museum and the Museum of History, have a dinner and dance, and farewell breakfast. The Kansas Coalition for Carbon Management is sponsoring a seminar, "Global Change and Natural Resource Management: Building a Partnership Response." The workshop will be Feb. 12-13 in Salina.

Workshop sessions will focus on various aspects of global change, including its implications and opportunities.

The next deadline for farmers and ranchers wanting to apply for up to $5,000 in cost-share funds from the Kansas Rural Center's Clean Water Farms Project is Feb. 7.

Funds are available for farmers and ranchers to begin farming practices or systems that improve or protect water quality on their farms. The project also offers an incentive payment for completing an environmental assessment or whole farm plan. An additional available option is a farm financial analysis of costs and benefits of any changes on the farm.

Washburn University's Division of Continuing Education will present "Basic Training for Managers," a five-day course billed as a "boot camp" for rookies and experienced managers who need to refresh fundamental management skills.

Participants will learn how to build a collaborative and productive work environment; recruit and retain high-quality employees; demonstrate a balanced and objective approach to solving problems; rehabilitate or remove low performers; recognize and remove barriers to communication and understanding; and manage change and encourage innovation.

The course will be given from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fridays, Feb. 8 through March 8. The cost is $595 or $500 if three or more persons from the same company register together. The registration deadline is Feb. 1.
