Entries being sought for Kansas Voices
Winfield Entries are being sought in the poetry and prose divisions of the 13th annual Kansas Voices Writing Contest.
Writers can enter in the youth or adult divisions. Entrants in the youth division must be enrolled in high school or be under 18 years of age. Writers must live in Kansas.
Entries must be unpublished stories or poems accompanied by an official entry form and a $3 entry fee. Guidelines and entry forms are available from the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council, 700 Gary, Suite A, Winfield, 67156, (620) 221-2161, extension 0. Entries must be postmarked by March 15.
More than $800 in prizes will be awarded. Winners will be honored May 4 as part of Kanza Days in Winfield.
Puppet show highlight of Chinese celebration
Kansas City, Mo. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, 4525 Oak St., is celebrating the Chinese New Year with an array of festivities at 7 p.m. Friday.
The celebration starts with a "Crouching Tiger, Fishing Monkey" puppet show. The puppets carved from camphor wood, painted in the bright colors of Chinese opera and dressed in hand-embroidered costumes will play musical instruments, compete in martial arts and shoot arrows.
Other activities include a hunt of Chinese coins, calligraphy, paper-cutting demonstrations and New Year's parade.
The event, geared for those 4 years and older, is free and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call (816) 751-1367.
African-American works on display in Tulsa
Tulsa, Okla. The works of some of the nation's most talented African-American artists will be displayed Monday-April 14 at the Gilcrease Museum, 1400 Gilcrease Museum Road.
The exhibit is part of a three-year national tour that features 55 two-dimensional works of art by 20 African-American artists, including Elizabeth Catlett, Jonathan Green, Henry O. Tanner, Hale A. Woodruff, Romare Bearden, Ernest Crichlow and Margaret Burroughs.
Museum hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.
