Peru: 14 killed in jungle clash
Indians attacked settlers in a remote jungle area in a clash over land, leaving at least 14 people dead and taking some hostages, local officials and police said Friday.
Two hundred Indians from the Aguaruna tribe armed with shotguns raided the settlement, some 500 miles northeast of Lima near the border with Ecuador, said survivors of the pre-dawn Thursday attack.
The Indian villagers were apparently trying to expel landless peasants who began settling the area in 1989, according to El Comercio, Peru's leading newspaper.
San Ignacio mayor Carlos Martinez said the Indians had also taken an unknown number of hostages, among them children as young as 2 years old.

Violent clashes took place in Santiago del Estero and in the central city of Rio Cuarto, 475 miles northwest of Buenos Aires. Protests also occurred in the capital as well as the provinces of Entre Rios, Formosa and Neuquen.
In Buenos Aires, about 500 merchants and small-business leaders beat pots and pans as they marched on the Central Bank, calling on the government to end 6-week-old banking restrictions as the economy teetered near collapse.
