— The University of Missouri Board of Curators on Friday approved a proposal to reduce out-of-state tuition for St. Louis- and Kansas City-area students who live in certain neighboring counties outside Missouri.

The curators voted unanimously for the fee reduction during the board's meeting in Kansas City, spokesman Joe Moore said. The reduced fee would apply to students who live within a four-county area of Kansas or Illinois and want to attend the University of Missouri campus in their area.

Students who live in Johnson, Wyandotte, Miami and Leavenworth counties in Kansas will be eligible for the reduced tuition at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Illinois students living in St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, and Jersey counties also would benefit from the cut if they enroll at St. Louis.

The change will begin this summer, Moore said.

"I believe the goal is to attract students who may not technically live in the state but live in the metro area," Moore said. "And to compete for those students that are within the area and, if given the opportunity financially, would like to go to the University of Missouri."

Curators will set the tuition fee at a future board meeting after Gov. Bob Holden makes his state budget proposal. Currently, nonresident students pay $423 per credit hour, while Missouri residents pay $141.50 per credit hour to attend the university's four campuses.

"I do not know if it will be as low as in-state rates. Those fees will be recommended to the board of curators (by administrators) for approval at a later date, most likely before the summer session," Moore said.
