State veterans commission holds meeting in Lawrence

Courts: Appellate court OKs hearing for convict from Lawrence
Chad Beers spent more than two years running from Douglas County robbery charges in the early 1990s. Now he wants and will get another day in court.
The Kansas Court of Appeals ruled Friday that Douglas County Judge Mike Malone must give Beers another hearing on issues arising from sentencing in the case.
Beers, who escaped custody shortly after being accused of the October 1993 robbery of a Lawrence grocery store, was convicted of the crime and the escape in 1996. He was sentenced to 97 months in prison, consecutive with sentences for separate federal convictions and convictions in Nebraska and Arkansas where he also escaped jail twice.
Beers challenged the consecutive sentencing. Friday, the appeals court said Malone did not allow Beers to sufficiently challenge all aspects of the sentencing.

Lecompton: Developer to update city on 700-acre building plans
Lecompton Area developer J. Stewart will meet with the Lecompton City Council Monday to give an update of his planned 700-acre development.
Stewart and his engineer will talk about the project and possible water upgrades that the city will need in the future. In the past, he has mentioned contributing money to build a new water plant that would serve the city and his development instead of building his own.
Stewart is planning a development that could bring as many as 2,000 new homes, some businesses and a community center south of town.
The city council also will consider approving an ordinance to raise sewer rates by 3 percent and will hear from Debi Moore, director of economic development for the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 333 Elmore St.
