Volunteering can be good for business. That's the message Becky Twedt of the Roger Hill Volunteer Center is trying to get out.
The Roger Hill Volunteer Center is seeking businesses and individuals to join its Corporate Volunteer Council of Douglas County. Organizations who join are asked to commit to one major event during the year and to encourage their employees to participate in community events and volunteer opportunities.
Twedt said some upcoming events that need volunteers are:
April 20: Home Improvement Day, which provides minor repairs and cleanup for area residents.
Sept. 7: Day of Caring, when volunteers help nonprofit agencies in a variety of ways.
Nov. 5: Kids Voting, which asks volunteers to work three-hour shifts on Election Day to assist youth in voting.
Twedt said a corporate volunteer program builds positive working relationships between companies and their employees; strengthens teamwork among employees while meeting real needs in the community; and allows companies to show their commitment to the community.
To become involved in the Corporate Volunteer Council of Douglas County, call the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, 865-5030, or send e-mail to rhvc@ixks.com by Jan. 31.
Last week's results
Grant Caughey, commander of Disabled American Veterans Jayhawk Chapter No. 22, said he received calls from three people who wanted to volunteer as drivers for veterans after the agency was profiled in last week's "How You Can Help."
"And we're hoping calls will keeping coming in," he said.
Volunteers are needed to drive veterans to Veterans Administration appointments in Topeka and Leavenworth. The chapter has its own mini-van so drivers do not have to use their vehicles. Volunteers are likely to be called into service once week, with each trip taking three to six hours.
Volunteers must have a valid driver's license and complete an interview at the Veterans Administration office in Topeka. A background check will be done on the candidate before he or she obtains a volunteer badge.
Those interested in volunteering can call Caughey at 832-8408.
