Several top Kansas University officials will have new job titles under a reorganization plan approved by Chancellor Robert Hemenway.

But their salaries and most of their jobs won't change.

The changes come at the recommendation of the Pappas Consulting Group, a Stamford, Conn.-based firm that last fall analyzed KU's administration.

"The bottom line is these organizational changes do not add any administrative costs to the university, and they should make us more responsive and effective," Hemenway said.

The biggest change in duties comes in the Chancellor's Office, where Reggie Robinson, who has served as counselor to Hemenway, will become chief of staff. Robinson's duties will include managing Hemenway's schedule, monitoring programs, managing policy issues and serving as Hemenway's liaison to the Lawrence community.

Other changes:

David Shulenburger, who has served as provost, will now be executive vice chancellor and provost. Officials said the change clarifies his position as both KU's chief academic officer and chief operating officer.

Theresa Klinkenberg, director of administration, will become chief business and financial planning officer. Her duties now include preparing budget documents, which had been handled by Marlin Rein, former director of budget and governmental relations.

The Office of University Relations also is undergoing several changes:

Janet Murguia, executive vice chancellor for university relations since July, has hired Kevin Boatright as associate executive vice chancellor.

Boatright, who will be paid $82,000 per year, had been assistant vice president of university relations for the University of Wisconsin system. KU officials said Boatright's salary won't increase the university's budget because they haven't hired a replacement for Rein, who retired in December.

Lynn Bretz, interim director of university relations since 1999, will become the permanent director.

Linda Luckey, assistant dean for advancement in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been named assistant to Murguia.

Margey Frederick, associate director of admissions and scholarships and director of KU's visitor center, will become director of visitor services and special events. She now will report to Murguia.
