To the editor:
The recent Associated Press account of the swearing in of Nicaragua's new president, Enrique Balanos, (Jan. 11) contains an inaccuracy.
It stated, "... the Sandinistas peacefully handed over power in 1990, pressured by U.S.-backed Contra fighters."
In 1990, there was an election, the Sandinistas lost, and power passed to the opposition much as it did here last year, only with less fuss.
The "pressure" it spoke of was a 10-year campaign waged by a terrorist group, the Contras, against the people of Nicaragua. These terrorists were openly funded by the U.S. The electorate was "pressured" to vote for a U.S.-sponsored candidate in hopes the slaughter would stop. How quickly we forget. How quickly we have become self-righteous.
