Housing construction posts gain for year
Construction of new homes and apartments fell 3.4 percent in December, but the total housing activity for the year managed a solid 2.2 percent increase. Economists called it remarkable for an industry that normally is one of the hardest hit during a recession.
The Commerce Department said Thursday that construction was started on 1.57 million single-family homes and apartments last month. That was 3.4 percent below the November level, which had risen a sharp 7 percent.

Motion to cancel Payless stock filed
The trustee overseeing the dismantling of bankrupt Payless Cashways Inc. has filed a motion seeking the cancellation of Payless' stock.
The motion, if approved, also will cancel the 101,651 shares held by UMB, which were set aside for distribution in Payless' first Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1997.
The bankruptcy court may rule on the request at a hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
