We're handing off questions to Lawrence public schools superintendent, Randy Weseman, about the way local schools teach the basics. Send us your questions.
Q. In terms of improving math and/or science instruction, would the
district give consideration to magnet schools that have an emphasis
in an area? Maybe a math oriented school or one dedicated to reading
and writing?
There has been very little public interest expressed in the magnet school
concept in Lawrence. Our board of education has always been committed to a
well-rounded curriculum and comprehensive schools. The district completed
a thorough evaluation of its science program in 1995, strengthening that
program for all students. At the present time, we are going through that
same process with the math program. Those are key skill areas for all
students. The isolation of content areas is counter to the comprehensive,
interdisciplinary approach to education that this community has come to
expect from its public schools.
Randy Weseman,
Superintendent of Schools
