A former Navy pilot says he's running for Congress.
Adam Taff, a moderate Republican, announced his candidacy Wednesday during campaign appearances in Lawrence, Overland Park and Kansas City, Kan.
Taff, 36, is expected to run against at least two other Republicans Dr. Jeff Colyer, a plastic surgeon, and Sprint executive Bill Grassie in the Aug. 6 primary. The winner will likely face U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Kan., in the Nov. 7 general election.
Taff played football and baseball at Benedictine College in Atchison and spent 11 years in the Navy before becoming a pilot for United Airlines, his current employer. While in the Navy, he served in the Bosnia and Somalia conflicts and post-Desert Storm operations. He is in the Navy Reserves.
"I've always had a desire to serve my country," Taff said, who lives in Shawnee.
If elected, Taff promised to support education and small business, keep Social Security solvent and strengthen defense. He said the National Guard should have a greater role in homeland security.
Taff said his candidacy has been endorsed by former Congresswoman Jan Meyers, R-Kan. Taff has not been in public office before.
