To the editor:

Thank you to the J-W and Business Editor Mark Fagan for Sunday's article on the demise of Oread Inc. That is the kind of reporting on local businesses and events that keeps me purchasing your newspaper.

The $620,000 tax bill that will not be paid could have gone a long way in supporting Douglas County services. But, thankfully there are a number of individuals and institutions looking out for the taxpayers' interests in order to help keep stability in Lawrence.

In Sunday's comics, Hagar the Horrible was climbing up the mountain to ask The Wise One, "What is the best advice you can give me?" He responded: "Always be nice to the people you meet on the way up ... because you'll meet the same people on the way down." Interesting that Kansas University sold the lab to Kimbrell and KU stepped in to purchase it back during the bankruptcy, though many will say Kimbrell was anything but nice during his short ownership.

Larry Northrop,
