Tulsa Time: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the ages 70-74 division of the Resolution Run 5K on New Year's day in Tulsa, Okla. Heitzman was clocked in 20:40.
Schmidtberger Ace: Gary Schmidtberger of Lawrence used a five-iron for a hole-in-one last Sunday on the 172-yard No. 11 hole at Alvamar Country Club. Witnesses were Karen Ingersoll, Jim Byrnes and Bill Shunk.
Vipers Champs: The Outback Vipers, an eighth grade girls basketball team, won the Little Apple Basketball Classic last weekend in Manhattan. Among the team members is Missy Vinyard of Lawrence.
City Team Ties: Lawrence United U-15 squad tied the K.C. Tigers, 2-2, in the K.C. Futsal League at the Johnson County Girls Softball facility. Goals were scored by Meghan Shanks and Mary Bernhardt.
Futsal is indoor soccer played on a basketball court without walls, smaller goals and a restricted bounce ball.
Johnson Hat Trick: Megan Johnson of Lawrence scored a hat trick for the Kansas City Strikers to help keep her team undefeated in a U-15 futsal game over the weekend.
LGA Participants: Mallory West and Ashley Sakumura of Lawrence Gymnastics Academy finished seventh and eighth respectively in the Level Eight all-around at the Folgers Invitational last weekend in Wichita. At Level Seven, LGA's Meredith West and Kathy Heflin were ninth and 10th respectively. At Level Six, Adrienne Struble was 10th. At Level Five, Alexis Gonzales earned a second in all-around, Arden Leland a third, Kelcy Bowers a fifth, Rachael Schaffer an eighth, Jennifer Hughes an eighth and Ellen Hernly a 10th.
Indoor Soccer Sign-Ups: Parks and Recreation is taking late registrations for kindergarten through sixth graders interested in its Indoor Soccer League. For information, call the Holcom Rec Center at 832-7940.
Cheerleader Grants: Free State High's Ali Lawrence and Jamie McCauley have received cheerleading scholarships to attend Coffeyville Community College. Lawrence and McCauley were scheduled to sign Coffeyville Community College tenders at 10 a.m. today.
Loomis Honored: Carleton College soccer player Dakota Loomis, a senior from Lawrence, has been named an academic all-district selection. Loomis has a 3.51 grade point average in political science. Loomis led the Knights in points last season with nine goals and two assists.
