IN 1977

The low natural gas pressure caused by the intense cold and the demand for gas caused a number of people to give their fireplaces extra-special use. Many said the forced experience had actually led to better family unity as they gathered around to keep warm and converse, taking time to stick together rather than fragment around their dwelling.

IN 1962

While many parts of the United States were plagued with serious flu epidemics, the Lawrence-Douglas County area so far was spared despite unusually severe January conditions.

IN 1902

On Jan. 17, 1902, the Lawrence World had an editorial reprinted from the Baltimore American titled, "NOT LIBERTY, BUT LICENSE." The Maryland newspaper had saluted U.S. Congressman from Lawrence, J.D. Bowersock, for his views on seditious publications seeking to make use of mailing rates from which the Post Office was trying to exclude. The Baltimore American noted, "Circulars and villainous publications of that character, which are scattered all over the country, do a vast amount of harm, especially among those whose minds are not evenly balanced, and who think they have a grievance against the government for not making rich men of them ... Congressman Bowersock characterized them as they deserved and has proved that those who, under the name of liberty, abuse their privileges, spend their lives in bitter attacks on the government under which they live and seek to stir up trouble and sedition among the people, need expect neither aid nor countenance from him."
