Paul McCartney has signed on to lead "a tribute to the spirit of everyday heroes" during the pregame show for Super Bowl XXXVI, set for Feb. 3 at the New Orleans Superdome, reports Billboard Online.

"As a sports fan, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be involved in the Super Bowl, and as a musician, I am honored to add my voice to the message of tribute that this year's Super Bowl will carry," McCartney said in a statement.

"We will salute those who have helped make us stronger since Sept. 11 and recognize those who will make a difference in every community," NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue added. "We are delighted that Paul McCartney has agreed to lead this tribute to freedom and everyday heroes."

A McCartney spokesman could not confirm whether his performance would include the track "Freedom," which the Beatles great wrote after Sept. 11 and debuted at the Concert for New York City, or a new song written specifically for the occasion.

Other performers include Mariah Carey singing the National Anthem and Mary J. Blige and Marc Anthony singing "America the Beautiful" as part of the pregame festivities, and U2 performing at halftime.

The event will be broadcast live by Fox.
