He was born March 17, 1920, in Valley Falls, the son of John Melvin and Margaret Jessie (McCoy) Stafford.
Mr. Stafford was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy in the South Pacific.
He was a toll collector for Kansas Turnpike Authority for 15 years until his retirement April 16, 1998. He was also a longtime salesman in the Lawrence area.
Mr. Stafford was a member of Valley Falls United Methodist Church.
He married June (Pettis) Staples on June 5, 1971, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a stepdaughter, Sherrill Jean Grinter, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three stepsons, James C. Staples, Thomas L. Staples and Charles H. Staples, all of Tonganoxie; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
