Philadelphia owns best record in conference

— The Philadelphia Flyers are reaping the benefits of their longest winning streak of the season.

Jeremy Roenick had a goal and two assists as Philadelphia extended its winning streak to six games with a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.

The Flyers, who have won 12 of their last 14 games, moved into first place overall in the Eastern Conference with 60 points.

"We're full of confidence," Roenick said. "We don't feel that we have to impress anybody. We come out and try to play a very sound system get the puck in, play as physical as we possibly can and try to intimidate teams."

Justin Williams, Simon Gagne and Kim Johnsson also scored for Philadelphia, which entered the game in a tie with Toronto and Boston for first place in the conference. The Maple Leafs lost 3-2 to Atlanta on Tuesday night, while the Bruins were idle.

"It was a great win for us," Flyers coach Bill Barber said. "I know they're not in our division, but they're in our conference. It is a four-point game. It's a very important game for us."

Roman Cechmanek made 36 saves as the Flyers snapped a five-game winless streak at the Corel Centre.

"They protected their lead really well," Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said. "They didn't make too many mistakes. They kept it pretty simple, they dumped the puck in and didn't give us much. We did turn around in the second and create some good chances, and they scored the 3-1 goal that kind of hurt us."

Radek Bonk scored for Ottawa, which outshot Philadelphia 37-35 and lost to the Flyers for just the second time in 12 games.

"They had a lot of shots from outside," Roenick said. "I don't think they had really very many quality scoring chances."

Phoenix Brett Hull scored his second goal with 2:19 left in regulation, and Detroit extended its unbeaten streak to six games . Hull deflected a slap shot by Mathieu Dandenault through a cluster of players that distracted goalie Robert Esche.

Denver Teemu Selanne scored with three seconds left in overtime to lift San Jose over Colorado. With time running out, Colorado defenseman Rob Blake lost the puck in the corner to Marco Sturm, who passed to Selanne.

Islanders 3, Flames 1

Calgary, Alberta Adrian Aucoin scored two goals, snapping a 40-game scoreless streak, as New York beat Calgary.

Kings 2, Predators 0

Los Angeles Steve Heinze scored the go-ahead goal with 15:44 left in the third period and Felix Potvin made 24 saves as Los Angeles beat Nashville for its third shutout in six games.

Canucks 5, Penguins 2

Vancouver British Columbia Mario Lemieux scored his first goal since returning from hip surgery, but Vancouver used balanced scoring to beat Pittsburgh. Lemieux scored on a power play midway through the third period.

Hurricanes 2, Wild 0

Raleigh, N.C. Aaron Ward and Bates Battaglia scored and Arturs Irbe recorded his 32nd career shutout as Carolina beat Minnesota to snap a three-game home losing streak.

Thrashers 3, Maple Leafs 2

Toronto Dany Heatley scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Milan Hnilicka made 40 saves as Atlanta snapped a five-game road losing streak. Rookie Ilya Kovalchuck and Lubos Bartecko also scored for the Thrashers.

Blues 3, Oilers 2

St. Louis Chris Pronger and Keith Tkachuk scored power-play goals to lead St. Louis over Edmonton, extending the Blues' winning streak to six games.

Lightning 5, Devils 4, OT

East Rutherford, N.J. Zdeno Ciger scored his third goal of the game at 1:25 of overtime to give Tampa Bay a victory over New Jersey.
