IN 1902

On Jan. 16, 1902, the Lawrence World told of a talk to be given by Lawrence resident Alfred Whitman on noted author Louisa Alcott. The World reported, "No author of the past century has such a firm hold on the affections of her readers as Miss Alcott, and when one has an opportunity to hear about such women from one who knew her intimately, the opportunity should be improved. A charge of 25 cents will be made at the door." Whitman was a childhood friend of the author, and "Laurie," a character in "Little Women," was based on Whitman.
