Area Basketball Roundup: Kaws crush Shawnee Marantha, 84-53

— Senior Jared Swafford scored a game-high 24 points to lead Perry-Lecompton to an 84-53 victory over Shawnee Maranatha in the first round of the McLouth Invitational boys basketball tournament on Tuesday.

The Kaws (4-6) led 40-32 at halftime and took control with a 25-11 run in the third quarter.

Aaron Swaggerty (17) and Aaron Spreer (16) also scored in double figures for the Kaws.

Jon Lemmon scored 12 points to pace Maranatha.

Perry will play Effingham at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the tournament semifinals.

Effingham beat Jefferson North, 47-40, to advance to the semis.

McLouth Jordan Rider erupted for 35 points, including six three-pointers, to lead top seed Valley Falls past McLouth in the McLouth Invitational.

Tyson Allen added 21 points for Valley Falls, last year's Class 2A state runner-up.

The Bulldogs (2-8) were led by Travis Steffey's 14 points.

McLouth, which has lost eight in a row, will play Topeka Heritage Christian at 6 p.m. Friday.

Perry Senior Andrea Korb scored a team-high 15 points to boost Tonganoxie to a Kaw Valley League girls basketball victory over Perry-Lecompton.

Aimee Eisman (13 points), Alicia Stauch (12) and Keri Walker (10) also scored in double figures for the Chieftains, now 3-7.

Sophomore Stephanie Swafford scored 15 points to lead the Kaws (3-7).
