Memorial services for John Edward Marshall Jr., 89, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church. He was cremated.
Mr. Marshall died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.
He was born Sept. 7, 1912, in Barnard, the son of John Edward and Grace L. (Mesick) Marshall. He graduated from Newton High School and worked for Norris Daughtry as an optometrist apprentice and watchmaker.
Mr. Marshall enlisted in the Navy in 1941, where he was a Chief Petty Officer and worked on airplane mechanical systems. After the war, he was hired as a watchmaker for Harry K. Wood in Anthony. He bought the store, and it became Marshall Jewelry. He became a certified watchmaker and gemologist. He also tuned pianos for several years until moving to Lawrence in 1996.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, serving many offices. He taught Sunday School and directed the choir at the church. He sang in a barbershop quartet. He was president of Anthony Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Kiwanis, a Boy Scout leader, a Mason and active in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He married Edith Mary Walton on April 9, 1939, in Sedgwick. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, John W., Iowa City, Iowa; a daughter, Coralee "Corky" Ann Marshall, Lawrence; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to United Methodist Youthville, Newton; to Southwestern College, Winfield; to First United Methodist Church, Anthony; or to First United Methodist Church, Lawrence, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
