He was born April 7, 1923, in Topeka, the son of Clarence J. and Hallie L. (Bell) Schmidt.
Mr. Schmidt worked as a typesetter and printer for the Lawrence Journal-World from 1967 to 1988. During World War II, he worked at North American Aviation, Kansas City, Kan.
He was a member of Goldwing Touring Assn.
He married Opal M. Waterson on Feb. 11, 1954, in Dighton. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Gregory P., Everest; a brother, LaVon C. "Joe," Ventura, Calif.; a sister, Phyllis L. Minnick, Erie, Pa.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Krista Schmidt, died July 8, 1997.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary prior to cremation.
The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Assn. or to the American Lung Assn., sent in care of the mortuary.
