DeSoto murder trial begins
Olathe Testimony began Monday in Johnson County District Court in the trial of an Edwardsville man charged with killing a DeSoto woman.
Following jury selection, prosecutors from the Johnson County District Attorney's Office began trying to prove Jesse Guardado committed first-degree murder in the shooting of Melanie S. Oliver.
Oliver was shot Sept. 4, 2001, as she slept in her DeSoto home.
A second suspect, Juan Crutchfield, 22, DeSoto, also is charged with first-degree murder along with kidnapping, aggravated battery, domestic battery and intimidating a witness. He also was scheduled to be tried Monday but the trial was continued to Feb. 4.
Chamber meeting to discuss transportation needs
Transportation of the future will be the topic of today's meeting of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.
David Downing, professor of aerospace engineering at Kansas University, will discuss NASA's Small Aircraft Transportation System at the meeting, which begins at noon at the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Drive.
Olathe teen-ager killed in traffic accident
A 17-year-old Olathe resident was killed Monday afternoon when the motorcycle he was driving rear-ended a pickup truck.
The accident occurred at 4:08 p.m. Monday on the 16500 block of Lackman Road south of Olathe.
The fatality occurred when a pickup driven by David Singer, 54, Gardner, was southbound on Lackman Road and was struck by a southbound motorcycle driven by Nathaniel Riley, 17, Olathe. Riley's injuries were fatal.
A passenger on the motorcycle, Shawn Merchant, 16, Olathe, was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. He was still in the operating room late Monday night.
Singer was transported to Olathe Medical Center where he was treated and released.
